Pool Closing Checklist

Balance about a week aheadpH 7.4–7.6 and alkalinity and calcium in range, so the water doesn’t etch or scale over winter.

Clean thoroughlySkim, brush and vacuum, and remove leaves before they stain. Clean the filter.

Raise chlorineShock or raise FC and let it drop back toward normal before adding a winter algaecide, if you use one (chlorine can break some algaecides down).

Remove accessoriesLadders, rails, skimmer baskets, automatic cleaner. Clean and store the salt cell dry.

Lower the waterTo the level your cover manufacturer recommends for your climate (often below the skimmer for mesh covers in freezing areas).

Protect plumbing (freezing climates)Blow out return and skimmer lines, plug them, and add pool-grade (propylene glycol) antifreeze if recommended. Never use automotive antifreeze. Fit a skimmer ice protector.

Drain equipmentOpen drain plugs on the pump, filter, heater and chlorinator; store the plugs in the pump basket so they don’t get lost.

Power downTurn off the timer and breaker, or set freeze protection if your equipment has it.

Cover and secureFit the cover with water bags or anchors; above-ground pools use an air pillow under the cover.

Mild climatesMany pools in frost-free areas stay open: run the pump a few hours a day, keep FC up and test every week or two.
